What connects you?

What is the one thing that connects your vehicle to the road?

by Samantha Gomez,
Service Drive Manager

Let’s talk about tire basics. Tires are one of the most important safety items on your vehicle. Having the right tires that are in good condition are important for cornering, braking and stability.

Think of it like needing a good pair of shoes. If your shoes are old and worn and have slippery soles you can lose your grip to the ground and slip. If your tires are bald, your vehicle can lose traction that can lead to road hazards or accidents. In addition, our shoes can be designed for specific purposes like boots that are designed specifically for mountaineering or skiing. Tires are designed for this same purpose too.  There are different treads and each one is meant for different road conditions and driving styles. The purpose of tread is to get water out from under the tire so it can contact the road.

The four types of tire tread are directional, symmetrical, asymmetrical, and directional/asymmetrical. The Directional tread is meant to roll in one direction and typically features arrows that display in that direction. This tread allows water to channel out from the tire to avoid hydroplaning. Symmetrical tread has the same pattern across the whole tire. This type of tire is the most common because it is typically quiet and long lasting.

Asymmetrical tread tires most commonly found on sports cars combine a variety of patterns for maximum grip on both wet and dry roads. Directional/asymmetrical tire tread features the V-shaped pattern of the directional tread for channeling water away from the tire and the dry weather traction of the asymmetrical tread.

When the Factory designs vehicles they work closely with the tire manufacturers to choose or develop tires that complement the characteristics and purpose of the vehicle. These tires, labeled OEA or OEM, are both original equipment tires. If you are looking to get the best ride and handling out of your vehicle as designed, sticking with the original tires is a sure bet.

Brett Weldon rejoins Team Hewlett

By Tom Fornshell, Service and Parts Manager There is a lot of talk about how important family is. It is fundamental to all of us and it is very important to me. It can either be our foundation or our undoing, a huge support structure or missing altogether… maybe all the above. Any way you have it, it influences the path we take in life. Hewlett Volkswagen is owned and run by an amazing family who teach me about generosity, respect, and caring every day. They make our store feel like home. Brett Weldon was a Volkswagen service consultant for sixteen years; and ten years with the Hewlett Family.   Good and high performing people in any industry are often lured away to different organizations hoping to capitalize on some of that performance. Such was the case with Brett. Heck, I don’t blame them, Brett is a Rockstar of customer service. Anyone that has had the fortune of dealing with him knows that. So, after a couple years of not so pleasant public perception of the ...
